The Mailbox drop that cost $161 and brought in $8811 in service plus retail

Jaye Clark webJaye Clark from Synergy Vitality Spa in Tauranga joined the Inner Circle program in June 2009 and has hit the ground running.  Jaye has owned her already successful salon for 7 years now and like many salon owners when they first join our program she was a bit skeptical as she had used other programs in the past that hadn’t worked.  Needless to say, after using the tools and techniques in the Essential Salon Owners Marketing Toolkit™, Jaye is a Worldwide Salon Marketing convert…

“I joined Worldwide Salon Marketing mid June 2009. The support and mentoring has been wonderful.

I believed I was pretty organized with my marketing, but the 100’s of marketing strategies and templates available through Worldwide Salon Marketing has been inspirational. The regular email contact and reminders just keeps me motivated.

The Inner Circle membership allows me to see and hear other Salons ideas and great outcomes, once again, really inspirational.

I am getting great results, an example being  the $99 facial packages.  We have put out 250 flyers per week for six weeks with the great offer and booked 89 packages from it, producing $8811.00 plus retail sales. I printed 2500 flyers for $161.00. 1500 flyers have been delivered.”

When I first spoke with Jaye, she was very clear about what her goals were.  She knew how much she wanted her average client spend up, she knew exactly how many new clients she wanted and within what time frame she wanted all this to happen.  This goal setting is part of the key to her success.  Instead of saying, ‘I want more clients and I want more money’ she has actually put specific figures on these goals so she can visualise it, measure it and achieve it.  We’re thrilled to report that she is well on her way to surpassing these goals, so soon we can re-assess and make new goals.

Congratulations Jaye on being our Worldwide Salon Marketing New Zealand member of the week!

Salon Templates Make Salon Superstars – Inner Circle Member of the Week: Linda Gordon

Salon Templates Make Salon Superstars – Inner Circle Member of the Week: Linda Gordon

The salon ad campaign that brought in 56 new clients in 5 days: “We placed the ad in the New Zealand Herald and Aucklander on Thursday and again in the Herald on Sunday. The total cost for the 3 ads was $1760, and by Monday afternoon we had 56 bookings…and the phone is still ringing!”

One of the most commonly asked questions I get from new Inner Circle members is ‘What happens if a salon down the road joins the program and is doing similar marketing?” …to which my answer is normally something along the lines of, “Well firstly, you are better to be in the program than not as you will have such a huge upper hand over the salons that are not members.”

Secondly, what makes your salon different from the salon down the road? By this I mean ‘what is your unique selling point or USP, that would make me choose you over the other salon regardless of whether they are an Inner Circle member or not.

And thirdly, do you really care what the salon down the road is doing?

Linda Gordon, owner of Arya Day Spa in Auckland

Linda Gordon, owner of Arya Day Spa in Auckland

I had an interesting conversation with Linda Gordon of Arya Day Spa about a month or so ago which was very similar to this.

Linda joined the Inner Circle program at the Auckland Road to Riches Seminar and during our first coaching call she asked why we would sign up her salon, which is only about 2km down the road from our salon.

My answer, well it went like what I have written above.  And if I believed for one minute that joining salons to our Inner Circle program in the local area was going to be to the detriment of our salon, then I wouldn’t do it.

But I like to walk to talk, so there are at least 2 salons within the vicinity of our salon that are in the program.   All these salons are experiencing massive results.  Paul Davis of ‘The Pureskin Clinic’ down the road in Ponsonby has seen his Salon grow 20% per month since joining the program 5 months ago, and now Linda Gordon is getting these exceptional results from her marketing.   Both these salons give the customers completely different messages from each other, and from our salon.  That’s what makes them stand out.

So you can imagine, when Linda emailed me this week to tell me about the ads she had run in the New Zealand Herald had brought in a total of 56 new clients in just a couple of days, I was over the moon for her.

“We placed the ad in the New Zealand Herald and Aucklander on Thursday and again in the Herald on Sunday. The total cost for the 3 adverts was $1760, and by Monday afternoon we had 56 bookings…and the phone is still ringing!”

So this campaign has brought in to date $5544 and if only 50% of these clients become regular customers worth around $1500 per year to Linda, then this campaign has just increased her annual turnover by $42,000.

You see our real competition is not the salon down the road but in fact it is the Supermarkets and Chemists that sell all the cheap cosmetic and hair products to ‘our’ clients.

I had one of those stomach turning conversations with Julieanne Narbey of ‘Hair @ Yours Mobile Salon’.  Julieanne used to work for one of those competitors (something a bit like ‘Shampoo n things’).

In her own words she said, “I was amazed at how many people would come into our shop having just had their hair done literally 10 minutes earlier and would buy the product they needed for their hair.  I asked why they hadn’t just bought it from the salon and their response was almost always that the hairdresser hadn’t told them about the products or attempted to sell them anything.” Is this going on in your salon on a daily basis and costing you serious amounts of money?

But back to Linda, congratulations on being our Salon of the week and long may I keep hearing these success stories from you!!!

Info Salon Marketing Superstars – Inner Circle member of the week: Dr Usha Venkataraman

Info Salon Marketing Superstars – Inner Circle member of the week: Dr Usha Venkataraman

There are good reasons we created the Essential Salon Owner’s Marketing Toolkit™ and the Inner Circle marketing and mentoring program for beauty and hair salons, rather than for lawyers, or…doctors, for example.

Lawyers and doctors – as anybody who’s ever dealt with them will confirm – already know everything. Just ask them. So I was never going to beat my head against a brick wall trying to teach a doctor or a lawyer about marketing.

Dr Usha Venkataraman of Aesthetic Image & Laser Centre in Melbourne - sales more than doubled in two weeks after joining the Inner Circle marketing & mentoring program in June 2009.

Dr Usha Venkataraman of Aesthetic Image & Laser Centre in Melbourne – sales more than doubled in two weeks after joining the Inner Circle marketing & mentoring program in June 2009.

But occasionally one of them slips under our guard and finds their way into the Inner Circle program, like Dr Usha Venkataraman and her colleague Soraya Pricop did at a Road to Riches seminar in Melbourne just over a month ago.

Click here to see the salon’s location

Luckily for these two, they weren’t like most doctors. For years their combined medical/cosmetic clinic had struggled, despite them ‘trying everything’.

So Dr Usha joined the Inner Circle group and took her Essential Salon Owner’s Marketing Toolkit home that day. And unlike many, they took action right away.

Soraya takes up the story:

“In the two weeks leading up to the seminar, my side of the practice (cosmetic) took just $2,500. After the seminar, I read through everything in the kit, listened to the tutorial CDs, took notes during my first coaching call… basically just followed the system.

“In my next 6 days at work, spread over two weeks, my takings jumped to $7,500! Dr Usha had a similar dramatic increase in takings. In a typical 5 hour session (before joining the program) she would take $2,000, maybe $3,000 at the most. But we just did some figures…in a recent 5 hour session, her side of the practice took…$8,000…!”

“It is quite amazing that we had struggled along barely making money for years, and suddenly, just a little bit of education and the right tools, and it’s made a remarkable difference…”

Note to all Doctors: yes, your business is different, yes you’re all very clever and yes, obviously you already know everything. It’d be just too awful to spend all those years in expensive medical school and not know everything.

Salon Marketing Ideas That Made This Salon Superstars – Inner Circle Member of the Week: Caroline Martelli

Congratulations to Inner Circle member Caroline Martelli of Martelli’s Beauty & Makeup in Mt Maunganui, New Zealand for a cracker of a result from an advertorial layout in her local paper this week.

Caroline joined the Inner Circle program in June and one of the first things that she said to me after joining the program was “Chris, I am going to be your best member ever!”

And if her first month in the program is anything to go by, she is certainly keeping her word.  You see Caroline is a perfect example of someone who takes massive action.  She has a great attitude, has implemented numerous techniques from the Essential Salon Owner’s Marketing Toolkit™, found out what works best for her salon and has seen her business thriving in just the few weeks the doors have been open.

Caroline ran a combination editorial and ad in her local Sunday paper and by the next day she had 14 new clients.  Four days later she has now got a total of 24 new clients from that one ad, and they are still calling.

“I am totally gobsmacked,” says Caroline. The ad cost Caroline $450 to run and has so far brought her in over $2,300 in one week.  If only 50% of those new clients become regular clients worth around $1500 per year each, then that will have increased Caroline’s annual turnover by $18,000…Not bad for a single promotion!!!

In addition to this Caroline has also booked in 26 clients (11 new and 15 existing) from a combination of ‘Raise the Dead’ letters (from the Toolkit), new client letters, a mail box drop, in salon promotions and much more.  Keep up the great work Caroline!

Want the ad Caroline used? Log into the Members Only ‘sealed section’ and navigate to ‘Getting New Clients – Beauty’ and you’ll find it under July 23, ready to download.

Nail Salon Marketing Plan: when customers leave you, it isn’t ALWAYS bad news…

Nail Salon Marketing Plan: when customers leave you, it isn’t ALWAYS bad news…

Last week we lost two of our long term Inner Circle members…and I couldn’t have been happier to hear from them.

No matter how good your business, no matter how much value you give, all businesses will lose customers from time to time, for all sorts of reasons. And the manner of that departure is a critical indicator of both the health of your business, and its future prospects.

Nothing gives us more delight here at Worldwide Salon Marketing as hearing that we have been instrumental in getting our Members into a position where they can sell their now-profitable businesses – instead of merely closing the doors and walking away, as so many are forced to do.

From Angeline and Andrew Griggs of Nails and Beauty with Attitude in Cairns, far north Queensland, a lovely letter to thank us for helping them realise their dream of business success:

“Andrew and I would just like to extend a warm North Queensland ‘Thank You’ for all your help and support over the last few years that we have been with you. It’s the end of an era for ‘Nails and Beauty with Attitude’, we have sold after 18 years and are looking forward to new adventures.

“We say goodbye for now and thank you for truly giving us the freedom to now do what we want to do. With many thoughts of gratefulness, from our family to yours, Andrew and Angeline Griggs.”

And from Maria Walsh, of Scentual Beauty Therapy in New South Wales, a beautifully-written letter describing her sorrow at having to leave the group for personal reasons, after taking her one-woman salon from a meagre $600 a week takings to more than $2,500 a week in less than a year…and still operating as a one-woman salon!

I have, with Maria’s permission, made her letter available here so you can read it in full (click on the pictures at left to enlarge them in a new window), but to paraphrase, “I learnt so much and you have given me a strength and boldness I never knew I had. In the beginning, I challenged the way some advertisements were worded (being a shy person!) but the response has been ‘That didn’t sound like you Maria but I would love to book this package because it sounds like just what I need!’ “

Of course, we also get a LOT of mail from Members thrilled to share their new-found success…and who wouldn’t leave the Inner Circle program for any reason.

Like Gail Smith, of Charmed Hair & Beauty in Morayfield, Queensland, who writes:

“…We are doing fantastic.  18 months on we have approx 1800 clients – growing by 15-20% per month.  I joined the inner circle program in Oct 08 knowing I needed more information and inspiration and since then I haven’t looked back.  My hair and beauty salon has grown consistently thanks to the marketing, my clients nag me about what promos are coming up and they are starting to pre pay just to make sure they don’t miss out.

“My salon target for the next financial year is over $500,000 and I am confident we will make it.

“When I first started using your type of marketing I had quite a few disappointments and failures and I will be the first to admit I fell on the old blame game – this just won’t work for my salon – its obviously just a bad idea, etc and one thing I learned is, that no matter what piece of marketing we’re given it can work, if you use it at the right time, to the right clients with value added offers that other salons would look at and say ‘no way am I giving that much away’.

“So I thank you, Greg and your wonderful team (had some great conversations with Jill and Jemma, too) you have helped me grow so much and I know I have still heaps more to learn – and share.”

IF YOU ARE NOT YET A MEMBER: If you do not yet have the done-for-you marketing tools, strategies, support, mentoring and continually-updated material that these and hundreds of other Members have used and are using to make their businesses successful, you are fighting your battle blindfolded with one arm tied behind your back.
